BitVM Enables Smart Contracts on Bitcoin

Robin Linus introduces BitVM, a new era of computational capabilities for Bitcoin

Bitcoin developer Robin Linus has introduced BitVM, a groundbreaking method, enabling smart contracts without the need for a soft fork. The approach, encapsulated in the proposal “BitVM: Compute Anything on Bitcoin,” highlights the feasibility of infusing Turing-complete off-chain smart contracts into the Bitcoin ecosystem. But the real magic of BitVM? It seamlessly verifies contract logic on Bitcoin using a combination of fraud proofs and challenges, all while respecting the sanctity of Bitcoin’s core protocol.

Bob Bodily has a great take on the potential impact that BitVM will have.

BitVM is Progress for Bitcoin

Powered by the novel two-party protocol, BitVM features a prover who carries out the program execution, juxtaposed with a verifier. This verifier stands guard, with the authority to critically examine and penalize any false claims made by the prover. Instead of performing computations on-chain, BitVM focuses on verifying them, envisioning a broader computational scope for Bitcoin that ventures beyond the standard realm of signatures, timelocks, and hash locks.

Robin Linus, affiliated with ZeroSync—a coalition committed to scaling Bitcoin via zero-knowledge proofs—has unveiled this ambitious project, potentially marking the onset of a new chapter in Bitcoin’s ever-evolving narrative.
