Is Bitcoin mining possible in outer space? NASA’s 2021 venture – which deployed the HPE Spaceborne Computer-2 to the International Space Station – showcased that servers can effectively operate in the vast expanse beyond our atmosphere.

Bringing this industry to space would fundamentally alter this dynamic, adding layers of complexity and risk.

Such an endeavor demands significant investment, placing it squarely within the purview of nation-states or major corporations. It’s conceivable that a combined corporate-state initiative, involving giants like MicroStrategy, Coinbase, SpaceX, OPEC, Apple, or Google, could pioneer this space. Given the advanced infrastructure required, it’s anticipated that the hashrate of these celestial mining machines would surpass 1,0000 TerraHash per second – or 1 PetaHash.

Space: A Bitcoin Miner’s Utopia?

The environment of outer space offers unique advantages for Bitcoin mining. Servers operating in space are governed by the same physical laws as on Earth, yet the conditions are vastly different. Furthermore, the cold void of space provides an ideal temperature for Bitcoin machines, allowing for faster processing without the threat of overheating.

Despite the appeal of mining Bitcoin in space, the practical challenges and costs involved make it a complex endeavor, nonetheless.
