At Yahoo Finance’s Invest summit, Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter unveiled the remarkable future of automation with their premier robotics projects, “Spot” and “Stretch.” These cutting-edge robots are set to turn science fiction into reality sooner than anticipated.
Spot, a four-legged mobile robot, leads the charge in autonomous warehouse navigation. It possesses the capability to take thermal and acoustic measurements while monitoring gauges, ensuring factory operations are both safe and efficient. During the event, Playter demonstrated Spot’s impressive mobility and camera vision system, showcasing its ability to operate confidently without human intervention.
Meanwhile, Stretch focuses on repetitive lifting tasks such as unloading shipping containers. By automating physically demanding jobs, Stretch liberates human workers to engage in more intricate and cognitive tasks. Its adaptability extends beyond shipping containers, making it a valuable asset for various warehouse applications.
Playter underscored the scalability and practicality of Boston Dynamics’ robotic solutions. He envisions an industry transformation driven by the synergy of artificial intelligence as the brain and robots as the body.
During the interview at Yahoo Finance’s Invest summit, Boston Dynamics CEO Robert Playter also shared his perspective on Elon Musk’s approach to building robots. Playter remarked, “I think he’s been watching too many science fiction movies… [his company] has the software wherewithal … on the other hand, he’s saying things that don’t make sense to me, like ‘we’re going to purposefully make the robot slow and weak because that’s gonna make it safe. I don’t get that part… you want to make robots that are strong and powerful. That’s the only way they’re going to be useful.”
Playter’s contrasting viewpoint adds a valuable dimension to the discussion surrounding the future of robotics and automation.
In 2021, Boston Dynamics became a subsidiary of Hyundai Motor Group. The Hyundai Motor Group bought a controlling share in Boston Dynamics for $800 million USD in 2020.
