Energy: Bitcoin Mining Facility Breaks Ground in Ethiopia

BitCluster, a Russian Bitcoin mining solutions provider, is set to launch a significant project in Ethiopia, which will revolutionize the cryptocurrency mining landscape. Scheduled to commence operations in January 2024, this venture involves the construction of a 120-megawatt (MW) data center in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia’s capital. The facility, spanning an impressive 30,000 square meters and located adjacent to the Kilinto high-voltage substation, is designed to meet the demanding needs of modern mining devices.

A key aspect of this project is its commitment to environmental sustainability. The data center will be entirely powered by renewable energy sourced from the Grand Ethiopian Renaissance Dam (GERD), Africa’s largest hydroelectric project with a 5.15 gigawatt (GW) capacity. This strategic choice not only aligns with global trends towards sustainable practices but also ensures an uninterrupted power supply, which is crucial for efficient and continuous Bitcoin mining operations.

The data center’s location in Ethiopia is not arbitrary. Ethiopia offers an attractive combination of abundant hydropower potential and favorable weather for mining operations. This investment by BitCluster could potentially transform Ethiopia into a new global hub for Bitcoin mining. The project is anticipated to boost Ethiopia’s economy by attracting international attention and stakeholders interested in sustainable Bitcoin mining practices.
