Sports: Umpire Nick Mahrley Exits Game After Being Struck by Yankees Slugger Giancarlo Stanton’s Broken Bat

During the fifth inning of the New York Yankees’ game against the Colorado Rockies on August 25, 2024, a frightening incident occurred when home plate umpire Nick Mahrley was hit by a piece of Giancarlo Stanton’s broken bat.

Stanton’s bat shattered as he hit a bloop single to left field, and the barrel struck Mahrley on the left side of his mask, knocking it off.

Mahrley immediately collapsed and was attended to by New York’s athletic training staff. The game paused as a medic came onto the field, and Mahrley was carted off, drawing applause from the concerned crowd.

Following the Yankees’ 10-3 victory, it was confirmed that Mahrley had suffered a concussion and would miss his next assigned series.

The game resumed with crew chief Marvin Hudson taking over behind the plate.

Mahrley, a 41-year-old veteran of 473 games as a callup umpire, had only recently become a full-time umpire. His injury serves as a reminder of the unpredictable dangers faced by officials on the field.
