In 2001, SLAM magazine’s 54th issue featured Shaquille O’Neal on the cover, but its true significance lies in introducing a young LeBron James to a national audience.

At just 16 years old, LeBron was highlighted in a feature that marked his first appearance in a major publication, setting the stage for his future stardom.

As of November 15, 2024, LeBron James is averaging 23.2 points, 7.7 rebounds, and 8.9 assists per game in the 2024–2025 NBA season.

The opening paragraph of the feature article, written by Ryan Jones, is something of legend:
“‘Are you the one I’m asking for the autograph?’
This from the waitress working the dining room at the Diamond Grille, the old-school steakhouse standing on a hill just seconds from downtown Akron, OH. There are four people seated in the booth, only one of whom is 16 years old, 6 feet, 7 inches tall, and dressed like he just stepped off a basketball court. That would be LeBron James, and yes, he is the one.”

Lebron James, the father of Bronny James, has also accounted for three consecutive triple-doubles this season, becoming the oldest player in NBA history to do so.

While SLAM 54 may not currently hold significant monetary value, its role in introducing LeBron James to the national stage could enhance its worth over time, especially as his legacy continues to grow.
