Apple has unveiled its latest MacBook Pro and iMac models, now powered by the advanced M4 Pro and M4 Max processors. These new chips promise significant performance enhancements, catering to both professional and personal computing needs.

The M4 Max processor, in particular, has demonstrated impressive capabilities. Ivan Fioravanti, Co-founder and CTO of CoreView, conducted a test using the M4 Max’s 40-core GPU to transcribe a three-hour video with mlx_whisper 0.4.1.
The task was completed in approximately 2 minutes and 19 seconds with maximum fan speed and no throttling. When system fan throttling occurred towards the end, the time slightly increased to 2 minutes and 29 seconds, with GPU frequency decreasing from 1.578 GHz to 952 MHz.

Comparative analyses indicate that the M4 Max’s GPU performance surpasses that of NVIDIA’s RTX A5000 workstation GPU in specific tasks, such as audio transcription, while consuming significantly less power. This positions Apple’s M4 Max as a formidable competitor in the high-performance computing arena.
The new MacBook Pro models, available in 14-inch and 16-inch variants, feature the M4 Pro and M4 Max chips, offering up to 40 GPU cores and support for up to 128GB of unified memory. These laptops also include Thunderbolt 5 support, HDMI 8K output, and enhanced battery life, making them suitable for demanding professional applications.
Similarly, the updated iMac, now equipped with the M4 chip, delivers up to 1.7 times faster performance compared to its M1 predecessor. This improvement enhances everyday tasks and multitasking capabilities, providing users with a more efficient computing experience.
These advancements underscore Apple’s commitment to integrating powerful, energy-efficient processors across its product lineup, challenging traditional GPU manufacturers in performance and efficiency.
