Heather Morgan, known by her rap alias “Razzlekhan,” has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for her involvement in laundering Bitcoin stolen during the 2016 Bitfinex hack. Morgan and her husband, Ilya “Dutch” Lichtenstein, conspired to launder approximately 120,000 Bitcoin, valued at $71 million at the time of the theft and now worth over $10 billion.
Lichtenstein admitted to hacking the Bitfinex cryptocurrency exchange in 2016, executing one of the largest digital currency heists to date. He was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the scheme. Both he and Morgan pleaded guilty to money laundering charges and cooperated with authorities, which contributed to their relatively lenient sentences.
The couple employed sophisticated techniques to conceal the stolen funds, including using fictitious identities and converting Bitcoin into other cryptocurrencies. Their efforts to obfuscate the origins of the stolen assets involved transactions across various platforms and markets.
Morgan, a former Forbes and Inc. contributor, gained notoriety for her eccentric rap persona, “Razzlekhan,” under which she released crypto-themed music videos. Her unconventional public image drew significant attention following the couple’s arrest in February 2022.
In the aftermath of their sentencing, Netflix announced the release of a documentary titled “Biggest Heist Ever,” set to premiere in December. The film will explore the couple’s criminal activities and unique personal lives, including Morgan’s rap career.
The Bitfinex hack remains one of the most significant cryptocurrency thefts, highlighting vulnerabilities in digital asset exchanges and the complexities of tracing illicit transactions in the crypto space. The case underscores the importance of robust security measures and regulatory oversight in the rapidly evolving cryptocurrency industry.
