Airlines Use Apple AirTag to Help Locate Missing Luggage

Apple has introduced a new feature in its iOS 18.2 update, enabling users to share the location of their AirTags with third parties, including airlines.

This development aims to streamline the process of locating lost luggage by allowing travelers to grant airlines access to real-time tracking information. Users can generate a Share Item Location link within the Find My app on their iPhone, iPad, or Mac, which recipients can view on an interactive map that updates automatically with the item’s location and timestamp.

Several major airlines have partnered with Apple to integrate this feature into their customer service operations. Carriers such as Delta Air Lines, United Airlines, British Airways, and Virgin Atlantic are among the initial participants.

Privacy remains a priority in this initiative. Apple has implemented measures to ensure that shared location links are secure and access is limited. Recipients are required to authenticate through their Apple Account or partner email address to view the link.

Additionally, shared locations are automatically disabled once the user is reunited with their belongings or after a set period, typically one week.

The Share Item Location feature is currently available to beta testers and is expected to be rolled out to all users in the coming months.

This advancement represents a significant step forward in leveraging technology to improve the travel experience, offering passengers greater peace of mind regarding the whereabouts of their luggage.
