NASA has appointed Clayton P. Turner as the associate administrator of the Space Technology Mission Directorate (STMD), effective immediately.
Turner, who has been serving as the acting associate administrator since July, will continue to oversee the development and demonstration of critical space technologies aimed at advancing future missions and maintaining American leadership in aerospace.

Turner’s extensive career at NASA spans over three decades, during which he has held several key positions, including director of NASA’s Langley Research Center in Hampton, Virginia, from 2019 to 2024.
Throughout his tenure, Turner has contributed to numerous significant projects, such as the Earth Science Cloud-Aerosol Lidar and Infrared Pathfinder Satellite Observation Project, the Space Shuttle Program’s Return to Flight, and the Mars Science Laboratory’s entry, descent, and landing segment.
His dedication to the agency and the engineering field has earned him several prestigious awards, including the NASA Distinguished Service Medal and the NASA Outstanding Leadership Medal.
As NASA embarks on the next era of space exploration, STMD, under Turner’s direction, will leverage partnerships to advance technologies and test new capabilities, aiding the agency in developing a sustainable presence on the Moon and beyond.
