In a recent development, Brazil’s Supreme Court has issued an order imposing fines of up to $8,874 per day on individuals using virtual private networks (VPNs) to access X.com, the platform formerly known as Twitter.
This decision follows a broader ban on X in Brazil, initiated after the platform, under Elon Musk’s leadership, failed to appoint a local legal representative, as required by Brazilian law.
The court’s decision marks an escalation in the ongoing tensions between Musk and Brazilian authorities, particularly Justice Alexandre de Moraes, who has been a vocal critic of X’s content moderation policies and its role in spreading misinformation.
The court’s ruling has sparked significant debate, as approximately 40 million Brazilians, nearly 20% of the population, are estimated to use X monthly. With the platform now inaccessible through conventional means, the use of VPNs has become a popular alternative.
However, the daily fines have been implemented as a deterrent, aiming to enforce the platform’s suspension until it complies with local regulations.
The ban and subsequent fines are part of a broader conflict involving content regulation and the spread of far-right ideologies on X. Justice Moraes has also ordered tech giants like Apple and Google to remove the X app from their respective stores, further tightening the restrictions.
Despite the crackdown, Musk and X have maintained a defiant stance, refusing to comply with what they describe as “illegal orders” for censorship, thus prolonging the standoff.
