T-Mobile Parent Company Deutsche Telekom Ventures Into Bitcoin Mining

Deutsche Telekom, Europe’s largest telecom, has started mining Bitcoin using surplus renewable energy in a pilot project called “Digital Monetary Photosynthesis.”

The initiative, in partnership with Bankhaus Metzler, aims to stabilize energy grids by converting excess energy into digital assets, per Deutsche Telekom.

The mining operations, hosted by Riva Engineering in Backnang, Germany, utilize surplus power from photovoltaic systems.

According to Oliver Nyderle of Deutsche Telekom MMS, the project addresses grid stability challenges caused by fluctuating renewable energy.

Bankhaus Metzler is leveraging the project to gain insights into digital asset applications, with a focus on advancing blockchain innovation in Germany. By balancing supply and demand in the energy grid, the pilot follows similar models used in the U.S. and Finland.
