China’s Space Transportation’s Yunxing Jet Achieves Mach 4 in Test Flight

Beijing-based aerospace company Space Transportation, also known as Lingkong Tianxing Technology, has announced the successful test flight of its supersonic jet prototype, Yunxing.

The aircraft achieved speeds of Mach 4, approximately 3,069 miles per hour, nearly doubling the velocity of the retired Concorde, which cruised at Mach 2.

The Yunxing prototype is designed for vertical take-off and landing and can reach altitudes up to 65,600 feet. These capabilities could enable passengers to travel from Beijing to New York in about two hours, significantly reducing transcontinental flight times.

Space Transportation plans to conduct further engine tests in November, aiming to have a full-sized supersonic passenger jet ready for its maiden flight by 2027. The company emphasizes the aircraft’s high lift-to-drag ratio, which enhances efficiency and stability at high altitudes.

Founded in 2018, Space Transportation focuses on reducing space exploration costs and developing hypersonic aircraft. The company’s rapid expansion includes research and development centers across Beijing, Xi’an, and Anhui, as well as a test facility in Korla, Xinjiang.

The development of the Yunxing jet aligns with global efforts to revive supersonic commercial travel. Other companies, such as Boom Supersonic in the United States, are also working on high-speed passenger aircraft, indicating a renewed interest in reducing long-haul flight durations.

The last civilian supersonic jet, the Concorde, was developed jointly by British and French aerospace companies and operated from 1976 until its retirement in 2003. The Yunxing jet’s advancements represent a significant leap forward in aviation technology, potentially ushering in a new era of rapid global travel.

As Space Transportation continues to develop the Yunxing jet, the company aims to make supersonic travel more accessible and efficient, potentially transforming the future of commercial aviation.
