Energy: New Solar Array Saves North Stafford High $2.8 Million in Energy Costs

North Stafford High School recently installed the largest rooftop solar array in Virginia, marking a significant step towards sustainability.

This impressive 1.8-megawatt system, consisting of 3,300 solar panels, is expected to generate 54 million kilowatt hours of clean energy over its lifespan, significantly reducing the school’s carbon footprint by offsetting 41,583 tons of carbon dioxide emissions.

Beyond its environmental impact, the solar project will save Stafford County Public Schools an estimated $2.8 million in energy costs over the next 25 years.

This financial benefit stems from the on-site generation of energy, which powers a significant portion of the school’s electricity needs​. In fact, the array is projected to cover up to 84% of North Stafford’s annual electricity consumption.

The installation is also providing students with valuable hands-on learning opportunities. Real-time data from the solar panels is incorporated into the school’s curriculum, allowing students to monitor energy production and gain insights into renewable energy technologies.

This unique educational component ensures that students are not only benefiting from a greener school but also gaining practical knowledge in the growing field of clean energy.

The solar array is maintained under a power purchase agreement with Madison Energy Infrastructure (MEI), allowing the school to benefit from renewable energy without upfront costs.
