The New York Yankees have ignited discussions across Major League Baseball (MLB) with their adoption of the innovative “torpedo” bats, contributing to a record-tying 15 home runs in their first three games of the season. ​

Designed by former Yankees analyst and MIT physicist Aaron Leanhardt, the torpedo bats feature a unique shape with the widest diameter positioned lower on the barrel, resembling a bowling pin.

This design aims to optimize the bat’s sweet spot by redistributing mass to the area where hitters are most likely to make contact, thereby enhancing the potential for powerful hits. ​

Players such as Anthony Volpe, Jazz Chisholm Jr., Cody Bellinger, Paul Goldschmidt, and Austin Wells have embraced the torpedo bats, experiencing notable success. Volpe, for instance, has hit two home runs in his first two games using the new bat, attributing his improved performance to its distinctive design.

The introduction of these bats has sparked debate within the baseball community regarding their legality and impact on the game. MLB has confirmed that the torpedo bats comply with official regulations, which require bats to be a smooth, round stick not exceeding 2.61 inches in diameter and 42 inches in length.

Despite MLB’s approval, some players and analysts have expressed skepticism. Brewers pitcher Trevor Megill criticized the bats, comparing them to equipment used in slow-pitch softball and questioning their place in professional baseball.

Conversely, other teams and players are taking note of the Yankees’ success and considering the adoption of torpedo bats. Rays third baseman Junior Caminero used the bat during a recent game, resulting in a hit, and indicated plans to continue its use intermittently. ​
