In a thrilling conclusion to the NCAA men’s basketball season, the Florida Gators beat the Houston Cougars 65-63 to claim their third national title and first since 2007.
The Gators overcame a 12-point deficit in the second half, with senior guard Walter Clayton Jr., who had been scoreless in the first half, contributing 11 crucial points after the break. Clayton’s pivotal defensive play in the final seconds prevented Houston from attempting a game-winning shot, sealing the victory for Florida.
Will Richard led the Gators with 18 points, while Houston’s L.J. Cryer topped all scorers with 19 points. Despite holding the lead for over 30 minutes, the Cougars were unable to withstand Florida’s late surge.
This championship marks a significant achievement for head coach Todd Golden, who, in his third year, becomes the youngest coach since 1983 to win a national title. The Southeastern Conference also celebrates its first basketball championship since Kentucky’s victory in 2012.
