Sam Altman AI Hardware Venture Attracts OpenAI Interest

OpenAI has reportedly considered acquiring io Products, an AI device startup co-founded by its CEO Sam Altman and former Apple design chief Jony Ive, for at least $500 million.

The startup is developing AI-powered personal devices, including concepts such as a screenless “phone” and other AI-enabled household gadgets.

While designs are still in the early stages, some sources emphasize that the product is “not a phone.”

Founded after Ive’s departure from Apple in 2019, io Products has attracted key former Apple personnel, including Tang Tan and Evans Hankey, who previously collaborated with Ive on iPhone designs.

The startup has also secured funding from investors like Laurene Powell Jobs’ Emerson Collective.

Discussions between OpenAI and io Products have explored various options, including a full acquisition or a strategic partnership.

If a deal proceeds, OpenAI would integrate io Products’ engineering team, potentially positioning the company to compete more directly with Apple in the AI-integrated hardware market.

This potential move aligns with OpenAI’s broader strategy to expand its presence in consumer hardware, leveraging Ive’s renowned design expertise to create innovative AI-driven devices.
