Vice President J.D. Vance Fumbles Ohio State’s Championship Trophy at White House Ceremony

Vice President J.D. Vance found himself at the center of an unexpected viral moment after fumbling the Ohio State Buckeyes’ national championship trophy during a celebratory event at the White House.

According to ESPN, the mishap occurred as Vance attempted to lift the trophy above his head following remarks from President Donald Trump and Ohio State head coach Ryan Day. The trophy, composed of a gold football affixed to a black base, separated in Vance’s hands, causing the base to fall and roll away on the South Lawn.

Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson quickly intervened, catching the football-shaped top before it too could hit the ground. While the Marine Corps Band played “We Are the Champions,” gasps from the crowd competed with the music.

Coach Day and Henderson assisted Vance in reassembling the trophy. The vice president later cradled the top piece in his arms as players laughed and posed for photographs, lightening the mood following the awkward moment ESPN.

Vance, an Ohio State alumnus, addressed the incident with humor online, stating, “I didn’t want anyone after Ohio State to get the trophy so I decided to break it,” on X.

The moment swiftly gained attention on social media, highlighting the human side of the political figure as he mingled with the victorious team. President Trump praised the Buckeyes for overcoming adversity during their 2024 championship season, including a 13-10 loss to unranked Michigan that ended their regular season campaign ESPN.

During his remarks, Vance acknowledged the presence of a Michigan fan in the crowd, joking with Secret Service about the person wearing a “dangerous weapon,” referring to their rival’s cap.

Despite the trophy incident, the White House celebration proceeded with high spirits as Ohio State marked its title-winning season with humor and camaraderie ESPN.
