Hongkong Post has announced a suspension of postal services for goods destined for the United States. Effective April 27, 2025, the postal service will cease accepting airmail items containing goods bound for the U.S.
This decision follows the U.S. government’s move to eliminate the duty-free de minimis treatment for postal items from Hong Kong and to increase tariffs on such goods starting May 2.
Hongkong Post has described these actions as “unreasonable” and “bullying,” stating that it will not collect the imposed tariffs on behalf of the U.S.
The Hong Kong government issued a formal statement through its logistics department expressing “strong opposition” to the U.S. decision.
Officials noted that under the new arrangement, postal services are now required to act as de facto customs agents—a role they refuse to adopt.
Critics argue the tariffs are part of a broader campaign by the U.S. to restrict trade from territories perceived as having close ties to China
It’s important to note that this suspension applies only to items containing goods; postal items consisting solely of documents are not affected.
For those in Hong Kong needing to send goods to the U.S., alternative shipping methods such as private courier services (e.g., FedEx, UPS, DHL) may be considered, though they might incur higher costs.
