Niger’s military-led government has officially declared Hausa as the country’s national language, replacing French. The announcement was made through a new charter published on March 31, 2025, marking a significant shift away from the nation’s colonial past.
Hausa, widely spoken across Niger, particularly in regions like Zinder, Maradi, and Tahoua, is now recognized as the national language.
The charter also acknowledges nine other local languages, including Zarma-Songhay, Fula, and Kanuri, as officially recognized spoken languages. French, previously the official language, is now designated as a working language alongside English.
This decision follows a series of actions by Niger’s junta to distance the country from France since the military coup in July 2023. These actions include severing diplomatic ties, expelling French troops, and renaming streets and landmarks with colonial-era names. The move aligns Niger with neighboring countries like Mali and Burkina Faso, which have also taken steps to reduce French influence.
