At the 2025 UIL Class 6A State Track and Field Championships in Austin, Texas, Harlan High School junior Tate Taylor delivered a historic performance by running the 100-meter dash in a wind-legal 9.92 seconds.
This time not only set a new U.S. high school national record, surpassing Christian Miller’s 2024 mark of 9.93 seconds, but also positioned Taylor as the second-fastest under-20 sprinter globally, just behind Botswana’s Letsile Tebogo, who ran 9.91 seconds as a teenager.
Taylor’s achievement is particularly remarkable considering he entered the meet with a personal best of 10.08 seconds and was ranked fourth nationally. In the final, he overcame a strong start by Duncanville’s Brayden Williams, who finished second with a time of 10.01 seconds. Taylor’s exceptional top-end speed allowed him to pull ahead in the latter half of the race, showcasing his sprinting prowess.
In addition to his 100-meter victory, Taylor also won the 200-meter dash with a time of 20.14 seconds, setting a new Texas state record and recording the third-fastest high school time ever in that event.
Taylor’s performances have not only solidified his status as a national standout but have also drawn comparisons to elite sprinters like Erriyon Knighton and Noah Lyles, who had slower high school times. His rapid progression from a 10.59-second 100-meter dash as a freshman to his current record-breaking times underscores his exceptional talent and potential for future success on the global stage.
