IBM Commits $150 Billion to U.S. Tech Expansion

IBM has announced a $150 billion investment in the United States over the next five years, focusing on quantum computing, artificial intelligence (AI), and mainframe systems. The initiative includes over $30 billion allocated for research and development to enhance domestic manufacturing capabilities.

The company plans to expand its production facilities in Poughkeepsie, New York, where it currently manufactures mainframe computers that handle more than 70% of global transaction value.

IBM also aims to continue designing, building, and assembling quantum computers in the U.S., reinforcing its position in advanced computing technologies.

IBM CEO Arvind Krishna emphasized the company’s commitment to American jobs and manufacturing, stating that the investment aligns with IBM’s 114-year history of supporting U.S. innovation.

He noted that the current regulatory environment under President Donald Trump’s administration is conducive to economic growth, further motivating the company’s investment strategy.

In addition to hardware advancements, IBM is focusing on AI development. The company has introduced tools to help clients integrate AI agents from various providers and build custom agents using IBM’s Granite AI models, as well as models from Meta and Mistral. This approach aims to meet growing demand for AI solutions across different industries.

IBM’s investment is part of a broader trend among major corporations increasing their U.S. manufacturing and research efforts. Companies like Apple and Nvidia have also announced substantial commitments to expand their American operations, reflecting a shift towards strengthening domestic technological capabilities.
