Trump Launches ‘Project Homecoming’ Self-Deportation Initiative

On May 9, 2025, President Donald Trump announced the launch of “Project Homecoming,” a federally funded self-deportation initiative.

The program offers undocumented immigrants the opportunity to voluntarily leave the United States with government-covered flights and a $1,000 “exit bonus.” Those who choose not to participate may face penalties, including sudden deportation, fines, and imprisonment.

The initiative utilizes the CBP Home app, developed by U.S. Customs and Border Protection, allowing individuals to schedule their departure. This app replaces the previous CBP One application used during the Biden administration.

Critics argue that the program may pressure vulnerable migrants into leaving without fully understanding the consequences, such as long-term reentry bans under U.S. law. Advocacy groups have raised concerns about the program’s impact on asylum seekers and the potential for coercion.

The Trump administration has also proposed deploying 20,000 National Guard troops to support large-scale deportation efforts, marking a significant expansion of immigration enforcement measures.
