Unlike directories such as /bin or /boot which hold programs or boot files, /etc is focused purely on settings that control how Linux and its services operate. Files like passwd, which holds user account data, or fstab, which lists the system’s mounted filesystems, are located here.

Every major service you install, from web servers to firewalls, will usually place its configuration files inside /etc. This directory is almost always text-based, making it easy for administrators to view and edit settings using simple text editors.
