Wi-Fi Standards and Frequency Bands

Modern wireless networks operate using evolving Wi-Fi standards, each offering different speed, range, and frequency capabilities.

These standards, managed by the IEEE under the 802.11 umbrella, are critical to understand for any technician tasked with configuring or troubleshooting wireless networks.

802.11n, released in 2009, was the first to support dual-band operationβ€”using both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequencies. It introduced MIMO (Multiple Input, Multiple Output) technology, which allowed multiple antennas to boost performance. It offered speeds up to 600 Mbps, depending on the number of spatial streams.

802.11ac, also known as Wi-Fi 5, improved on 802.11n by operating only on the 5 GHz band, offering wider channels and MU-MIMO (Multi-User MIMO) support. It supports theoretical speeds beyond 1 Gbps, making it ideal for high-bandwidth tasks like streaming and gaming.

802.11ax, branded as Wi-Fi 6, operates on both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz, with improved OFDMA (Orthogonal Frequency-Division Multiple Access), allowing more efficient simultaneous device connections. Wi-Fi 6E, an extension of 802.11ax, introduces the 6 GHz band, reducing congestion and increasing speed and capacity further.

Technicians should understand that 2.4 GHz offers better range but more interference, while 5 GHz and 6 GHz offer faster speeds with shorter range. Device compatibility, channel width, and router configuration all impact wireless performance. When setting up or troubleshooting a SOHO network, knowing which standard is supported by the router and client device ensures optimal throughput and stability.
