File System Directory #8: /mnt (Linux OS)

The /mnt directory in Linux serves as a traditional location for temporarily mounting filesystems.

Unlike /media, which is mostly used for automatic mounting of USBs and other external devices, /mnt is primarily used by system administrators for manual mounts during maintenance, recovery, or troubleshooting.

When you need to access another drive or partition for testing or repairs, you might mount it to /mnt/tempdrive. This makes /mnt useful for short-term or experimental tasks without cluttering the automatically managed directories like /media.

While modern systems rely more on /media for user devices, /mnt is still widely used in professional Linux environments for tasks like disk imaging, chroot environments, or data recovery.

For Linux+ certification, understanding /mnt is key because it teaches how administrators control mount points manually and responsibly.
