Veras, originally from Angola and covering the White House, shared that she “saw hope” in Congo and noted that President Félix Tshisekedi proposed nominating Trump for a Nobel Peace Prize.
After her remarks, Trump commented “So beautifully stated” before complimenting her appearance and inner beauty.
Presence at the event included Vice President JD Vance, Secretary of State Marco Rubio, and foreign ministers from both African nations.
Formal signing addressed decades-long conflict in eastern Congo involving over 100 armed groups; accord aims to halt support for militias, withdraw foreign troops and incentivize economic development linked to mineral resources.
Per Reuters, plan includes withdrawal of Rwandan troops within 90 days and setting up a joint security coordination regime, meanwhile a broader economic framework will follow under what’s being called the “Washington Accord.” \
