Fast-food chain Steak ‘n Shake has officially integrated Bitcoin payments via the Lightning Network across all its U.S. locations. This move allows customers to pay for their meals using Bitcoin by scanning a Lightning-enabled QR code at the register, facilitating instant, low-fee transactions. The company announced the rollout on May 16, 2025, marking a significant step in mainstream Bitcoin adoption within the fast-food industry.
The implementation of the Lightning Network, a second-layer solution on the Bitcoin blockchain, enables rapid and scalable transactions, making it suitable for everyday purchases like burgers and fries.
Steak ‘n Shake’s adoption of this technology positions it among the first major fast-food brands to fully embrace Bitcoin payments, reflecting a commitment to integrating cryptocurrency into its payment systems.
The company reported that on the first day of the rollout, Steak ‘n Shake accounted for one in every 500 Bitcoin transactions globally. This high volume indicates strong customer interest in using Bitcoin for real-world retail transactions. Additionally, the integration has led to a 50% reduction in payment processing fees compared to traditional credit card transactions, enhancing financial efficiency for the company.
To encourage adoption, Steak ‘n Shake partnered with Speed Wallet to offer promotions, including 1,000 SATS cashback for payments made via the Lightning Network. Customers who shared videos of their Bitcoin transactions on social media were eligible for an additional 2,000 SATS, fostering community engagement and awareness.
