Americans can now send voluntary contributions via Venmo and PayPal through the official “Gifts to Reduce the Public Debt” page on Pay. Payment options already include bank transfers, credit/debit cards, and PayPal; Venmo support arrived between February and March 2025.
Since 1996 the program has collected around $67.3 million in donations—enough to pay off just 20 minutes of federal spending. In 2024 U.S. citizens donated $2.7 million, and preliminary figures show $434,500 raised in the first five months of 2025.
With federal debt increasing at nearly $55,000 per second and expected to rise by another $3.4 trillion under the recent “Big Beautiful Bill,” critics say individual contributions, even via Venmo, offer symbolic civic engagement but are not a practical fiscal solution.
