A thermal printer uses heat to transfer images onto paper. It comes in two types:
- Direct Thermal:
- No ink or ribbon needed.
- Uses heat-sensitive paper that blackens when heated.
- Common in receipts and shipping labels.
- Thermal Transfer:
- Uses a heated ribbon to transfer wax or resin onto media.
- Durable prints ideal for barcode labels and inventory tags.
Consumables and Maintenance
Direct thermal printers require only thermal paper, while thermal transfer printers need both ribbon and label stock.
Maintenance includes:
- Cleaning the printhead with isopropyl alcohol to remove buildup.
- Replacing worn rollers.
- Ensuring proper paper alignment to avoid jams or fading.
Technicians must also check for signs of printhead wear, incorrect temperatures, or paper with poor heat response when troubleshooting output quality.
