Amazon has announced Fastnet, its first independently owned transatlantic subsea cable project, designed to connect Maryland, USA, with County Cork, Ireland.
Scheduled for completion in 2028, the system will deliver more than 320 terabits per second (Tbps) of capacity, enhancing Amazon Web Services (AWS) infrastructure and boosting global cloud computing and artificial intelligence (AI) network resilience.
The project marks a major step in Amazon’s effort to expand its private digital backbone across the Atlantic, ensuring faster data transfer speeds and increased reliability for AWS customers.
The Fastnet project represents a major leap in Amazon’s investment in fiber optic technology, which serves as the backbone of modern digital communication. Unlike traditional copper systems, fiber optics transmit data as pulses of light, enabling exponentially higher bandwidth and lower latency over vast distances.
By deploying its own transatlantic fiber optic cable, Amazon gains direct control over data transmission between North America and Europe, reducing dependency on third-party networks.
This not only enhances AWS’s cloud and AI performance but also establishes a long-term infrastructure foundation capable of supporting the next generation of data-driven technologies and global connectivity demands.
