Fiber Optic Training: OS1 and OS2

OS1 and OS2 are classifications of singlemode fiber optic cable defined by their construction and performance characteristics. OS stands for “Optical Singlemode.”

OS1 is typically used for indoor applications and features tight-buffered construction, supporting up to 10 km at 1310 nm and 40 km at 1550 nm.

OS2 is optimized for outdoor and long-haul deployments, using loose-tube or blown fiber construction with lower attenuation, supporting distances beyond 100 km. Both types use a 9 µm core, but OS2 offers superior performance in high-bandwidth, long-distance networks such as metropolitan or backbone infrastructures.
