Solar Energy: Net Metering

Net metering is a billing arrangement in which the electricity produced by a solar photovoltaic (PV) system is first used to meet the on-site demand, and any surplus is exported to the utility grid.

When this happens, the customer earns credits that can be applied against the electricity they consume from the grid at times when their solar panels are not producing enough power, such as at night or during cloudy weather.

The value of net metering lies in its ability to reduce utility bills, improve the financial return on investment for solar installations, and encourage wider adoption of renewable energy.

By effectively treating the grid as a “virtual battery,” net metering provides homeowners and businesses with a simple, cost-effective way to balance their energy needs while contributing clean electricity to the community.

Beyond the financial benefits, net metering also supports environmental goals by incentivizing renewable energy production, reducing reliance on fossil fuels, and promoting energy independence.

However, the exact value can vary depending on local regulations, compensation rates, and utility policies, which means that the benefits of net metering are not uniform across all regions.
