Expert Panel Debates Best Bitcoin Mining Cooling Methods at Pacific Bitcoin Festival

The Pacific Bitcoin Festival 2023 had a valuable session led by Bitcoin mining industry experts Bob Burnett, Steve Barbour, Taylor Monnig, Matt Lohstroh, and Lauren Lin. The discussion centered on the spectrum of cooling methods, from traditional air and immersion techniques to innovative hydro cooling methods.

Air Cooling: The Old Reliable

Air cooling is often the go-to choice for its simplicity and cost-effectiveness, remaining a popular choice among miners and computer enthusiasts. Its benefits include cost-effectiveness, low maintenance, versatility in design, and the easy customization of fans. However, air cooling can be noisier, is not always efficient for high-heat systems, has a larger physical footprint, and disperses heat within the case. Still, for those looking for an affordable, straightforward solution, air cooling often fits the bill (literally).

Liquid Cooling: Efficient and Quiet

Liquid cooling has gained traction for its efficiency and silent operation. It offers enhanced thermal protection, quieter operation, consistency in performance, the ability to reach lower temperatures, and a higher thermal mass. In my opinion this is the most interesting form of bitcoin mining. On the downside, it often comes with a higher cost, increased maintenance, and added complexity. Despite these challenges, for miners or computer users demanding peak performance and minimal noise, liquid cooling, especially All-in-One (AIO) systems, is a worthy consideration.

Immersion Cooling: The New Frontier

Immersion cooling is split between single-phase and two-phase systems. The single-phase is budget-friendly but consumes more power, while the two-phase has higher initial costs but touts significant energy efficiency. With benefits like efficient heat transfer, the ability to handle higher power densities, and substantial energy savings, immersion cooling is reshaping the landscape of mining cooling solutions. As Someone who has experience working at an immersion cooling facility, I can say that immersion cooling technology definitely has its trade offs. On one hand there is not a lot of machines that fail within the biodegradable oil. on the other hand, when it is time for maintenance, the oil on your hands and laptop can be a hassle as you have to spend a lot of time wiping things off while working.
