California is set to allow residents to add their driver’s licenses and state IDs to the Apple Wallet on their iPhones and Apple Watches.
This move will make California one of the many states exploring digital IDs, a feature that Apple introduced in collaboration with the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and other state governments.
The integration of digital IDs into Apple Wallet aims to enhance convenience and security for residents, particularly at airport security checkpoints where digital IDs will be accepted at certain TSA locations.
Apple assures that the digital IDs will benefit from the same privacy and security features built into Apple devices. For instance, Face ID and Touch ID will ensure that only the person who added the ID can access or present it. Moreover, digital ID data will be encrypted and securely transmitted directly to identity readers, minimizing the risk of theft or unauthorized access.
The growing adoption of digital IDs reflects a broader trend across the United States, with nearly 30 states at various stages of exploring mobile digital licenses.
