A bushing transformer is a power transformer component that uses electrical bushings to safely carry high-voltage electrical current through the grounded steel tank of the transformer without allowing electricity to short to the enclosure.
Bushings provide electrical insulation while creating a secure connection between the transformer’s internal windings and the external power system.
They are critical for maintaining safe operation in substations, industrial facilities, power plants, and electrical distribution networks.
Modern transformer bushings are typically constructed from porcelain, polymer composite, or resin-insulated materials and contain carefully designed insulation systems capable of withstanding high voltages, environmental contamination, and electrical stress.
Large power transformers may use bushings rated from a few kilovolts to well over 500 kV, depending on the application.
A transformer bushing is the insulated connection point that allows a high-voltage conductor to enter or leave a transformer without energizing the grounded steel tank.
Inside the bushing is a conductor that carries current, surrounded by layers of electrical insulation that keep the voltage safely contained. The outside is typically made of porcelain or polymer with weather sheds that increase the insulation path and help keep moisture and contamination from causing electrical tracking or flashover.
On larger power transformers, bushings also contain internal capacitive grading layers that evenly distribute electrical stress across the insulation.
During inspections, electricians and utility technicians look for cracked insulators, oil leaks, contamination, loose connections, overheating, and signs of partial discharge, since a failed bushing can lead to transformer damage, outages, or catastrophic failure.
Because bushings are exposed to weather, heat, moisture, and electrical loading, they are routinely inspected for oil leaks, cracks, contamination, partial discharge, and insulation degradation. Proper maintenance helps prevent transformer failures and improves the long-term reliability of electrical power systems.
