Nick Chubb is closing his NFL career where it began. The four-time Pro Bowl running back will formally retire as a member of the Cleveland Browns on Friday, September 25, the NFL reported Thursday.

Chubb had already announced in August that he was done playing after eight NFL seasons. Friday’s move gives the former Browns star a ceremonial return to the franchise that selected him with the No. 35 overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft.

One of Cleveland’s defining runners

Chubb finishes his career with 7,349 rushing yards, 1,109 receiving yards and 59 total touchdowns across 100 games, according to NFL.com. His peak included four consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons, topped by 1,525 rushing yards in 2022.

His Cleveland career was also defined by recovery. Chubb returned to the field after the major knee injury he suffered in 2023, then played his final NFL season with Houston before announcing his retirement.

Back to the Browns

The Browns began highlighting the news Thursday. Haslam Sports Group managing partner JW Johnson discussed Chubb during the September 24 edition of Cleveland Browns Daily, while the NFL’s league roundup confirmed that Chubb will retire as a Brown on Friday.

The ceremonial ending reconnects Chubb with the team and fan base most associated with his professional career. For Cleveland, it also provides a formal sendoff for one of the franchise’s most productive players of the modern era.
