Paramount Pictures is developing a live-action film set in the Cyberpunk 2077 universe, with CD Projekt RED involved as a producer and veteran producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura attached to the project.
The news was first reported by Deadline and confirmed publicly by CD Projekt RED joint CEO Michał Nowakowski. Reuters reported that CD Projekt RED shares rose roughly 3% in early Friday trading after the announcement.
For now, the project is still early. No writer, director, cast, production start, or release date has been announced.

What Has Actually Been Confirmed
Paramount is developing the film with CD Projekt RED, while Lorenzo di Bonaventura is attached as producer. Di Bonaventura is best known for producing multiple Transformers films and other large-scale franchise projects.
Nowakowski said Paramount shares CD Projekt RED’s “creative ambitions for the Cyberpunk franchise” and that more details will come later. CD Projekt RED told Reuters it had nothing to add beyond that statement.
Night City Already Has Screen-Tested Material
Cyberpunk 2077 is already unusually well positioned for a film adaptation because much of its identity is cinematic: dense urban production design, body modification, megacorporate politics, crime, surveillance, celebrity culture, and a cast built around morally complicated characters.
CD Projekt RED’s official launch trailer remains one of the clearest compact introductions to the tone Paramount is inheriting: Night City as a place where technology, ambition, violence, and personal identity constantly collide.
The Franchise Is Much Bigger Than It Was In 2020
Cyberpunk 2077 has now sold more than 40 million copies, while the Phantom Liberty expansion has sold about 15 million, according to figures cited by Reuters. The franchise has also expanded through Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, books, comics, merchandise, and a game sequel now in development.
CD Projekt RED said in July that 184 developers were working on the next Cyberpunk game. That gives Paramount a rare advantage for a game adaptation: this is not a dormant property being revived for a one-off movie. It is an active franchise with another major game already underway.
The Biggest Unknown Is The Story
The most important unanswered question is whether Paramount will adapt V and Johnny Silverhand directly or tell a new story elsewhere in Night City. CD Projekt RED has previously shown that the universe can support standalone characters through Cyberpunk: Edgerunners, so the film does not necessarily need to recreate the game’s main plot.
That may be the smarter route. Cyberpunk 2077 is built around player choice, branching relationships, and dozens of hours of exploration—things a two-hour film cannot reproduce directly. A new story could preserve the world without turning the movie into a compressed replay of the game.
For now, that remains speculation. What is confirmed is simpler: Paramount has entered Night City, CD Projekt RED is involved, and Hollywood now has one of gaming’s largest modern science-fiction worlds on its slate. CD Projekt RED’s own archive offers a useful reminder of how much visual and narrative material the studio has already built for the franchise.
Editor’s note: No writer, director, cast, production date, or theatrical release date had been announced at publication time.
