Enphase Revives Aging Commercial Solar

Enphase Energy is pushing a new use for commercial microinverters: replacing failed or aging string and central inverters while keeping the existing solar panels and racking in place.

In an October 14 announcement, Enphase highlighted U.S. repowering projects using its IQ9 Commercial Microinverters. At Furman University in South Carolina, Detail Solar upgraded the first 30 kW of a planned repowering for a 988 kW array whose legacy string-inverter architecture was underperforming. In Pennsylvania, Endless Energy is repowering a 240 kW AC system at Peirce Welding and Assembly with 561 IQ9N-3P units.

A recent owner post shows the same basic repowering idea at smaller scale: replace failed inverter electronics while keeping usable solar modules in service.

The IQ9N-3P and IQ9S-3P support 480 V three-phase systems, while the IQ8P-3P serves 208 V sites. Enphase says its 2-to-1 configuration can pair two older modules with one microinverter, helping match slightly degraded panels to newer electronics without replacing the entire array.

The hardware itself is also notable. Solar Power World reported earlier this year that the IQ9N-3P uses gallium nitride power electronics, supports 480Y/277 V commercial grids, reaches up to 97.5% efficiency, and can support modules up to 600 W.

BayWa r.e. and Enphase walk through the IQ9N commercial microinverter, including 480 V three-phase applications and system-design considerations.

The shift is essentially a maintenance strategy for aging solar fleets. BitcoinVersus.Tech has previously explained how solar inverters convert panel output into usable AC power, how a centralized string inverter architecture works, and how solar cells generate the DC electricity those inverters process. The new repowering projects show that the panels can outlive the electronics around them.
