Bitcoin Verse of the Day — October 14, 2026
“Proof of Work is based on the laws of physics, so you have to work with the world as it is…”
Vitalik Buterin, Ethereum co-founder
This verse is compelling because it describes the deepest difference between proof of work and purely virtual consensus rules in unusually simple language. Buterin’s larger point was not an endorsement of Bitcoin: he was explaining that proof of work must operate within existing realities such as electricity, hardware and computers, while proof of stake gives protocol developers more freedom to design rules inside a virtual system.
For Bitcoin, that physical constraint is central. Mining connects a digital ledger to machines, energy and thermodynamics. BitcoinVersus has explored the same idea through Landauer’s Principle and mining efficiency, the economics of Bitcoin’s physical power, and proof of work as a cybersecurity primitive.
Fidelity Digital Assets cites this passage and traces it to Ethereum’s official Mainnet Merge Viewing Party. In the original source video, Vitalik Buterin gives the proof-of-work-versus-proof-of-stake explanation at about 2:31:20. That original recording—not a related interview—is the source for this Bitcoin Verse.
