Egypt Starts Construction of 1.2 GW Nefer Minya Solar and Battery Project

Egyptian renewable developers Infinity Power and Hassan Allam Utilities Energy issued a notice to proceed for full-scale construction of the Nefer Minya solar-and-battery project in West Minya on October 27, 2026. The facility is planned for 1.2 gigawatts-peak (GWp) of photovoltaic capacity and 600 megawatt-hours (MWh) of energy storage, with commercial operation targeted for September 2027.

The construction authorization follows early site work begun in June and a November 2025 power-purchase agreement with the Egyptian Electricity Transmission Company. The main engineering, procurement and construction contract is being executed by Hassan Allam Construction and Sterling & Wilson, according to the October 27 project statement.

What the 600 MWh Battery Will Do

Solar panels produce their highest output around daylight hours, while demand can remain elevated after sunset. Nefer Minya’s battery is intended to absorb some daytime energy and release it during evening peaks. Its 600 MWh rating describes stored energy, not discharge power; the published construction announcement does not specify how many megawatts it can deliver simultaneously. Our MW-versus-MWh explainer outlines the distinction.

The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development separately describes a 1,000 MW alternating-current solar plant, while developer materials use 1.2 GWp for the panels’ peak direct-current rating. Those figures describe different electrical measurement points and should not be treated as competing plant announcements.

Financing, Module Supply and Next Milestones

On October 20, the developers announced up to $566 million in debt financing, including up to $265 million arranged by EBRD. The $265 million is a component of the larger package, not an extra sum to add to it. Electricity is to be sold under a 25-year contract, giving the project a proposed long-term revenue framework.

The developers awarded an earlier solar-module supply letter to AIKO Energy. Moving into construction turns those procurement and financing commitments into an execution test: equipment delivery, grid connection, battery commissioning and first electricity remain ahead.

The companies estimate the completed plant could supply the equivalent of about 1.4 million homes and avoid approximately 1.5 million tonnes of carbon dioxide annually. Those are projected benefits, not measured 2026 output. Unlike the Dandara project intended to serve aluminium manufacturing, Nefer Minya is contracted to supply the national grid. Other recent solar expansion includes China’s offshore Tianwan development and DTE’s Michigan solar opening.
