YouTube is preparing to translate livestream speech into other languages in real time, bringing AI voice dubbing to live broadcasts rather than only prerecorded videos.

The company announced the pilot at Made On YouTube 2026. The first tests are scheduled for early 2027 and will begin with English and Spanish, potentially letting creators speak naturally while viewers hear an automatically translated voice track.

AI dubbing moves into live video

YouTube says more than 40% of live watch time comes from viewers outside a creator’s home country. Live auto-dubbing is designed to reduce the language barrier while a broadcast is still happening rather than waiting for a translated version after the stream ends.

Existing auto-dubbing already supports translated voices

YouTube’s current automatic dubbing system can generate translated audio tracks for eligible prerecorded videos. The company says viewers can switch between original and dubbed audio, while eligible creators can review or manage generated dubs in YouTube Studio.

YouTube says automatic dubbing currently works across dozens of language combinations, with Expressive Speech available for a subset of languages to better reproduce qualities such as pitch and intonation. Live translation adds a harder engineering problem because speech recognition, translation and synthesized voice output must happen with very little delay.

More than 600 million viewers watched Live each day

YouTube says that in August 2026, more than 600 million logged-in viewers on average watched live content, including archived live broadcasts, each day. That scale makes real-time voice translation potentially important infrastructure for gaming, technology events, sports commentary, education and global news.

The company is also expanding Live with co-host matchmaking, Watch With reactions and Live Showdowns. The dubbing pilot is expected to start small before wider availability.
