Bitcoin: Fold Opens Bitcoin Rewards Credit Card to Everyone

Fold has moved its Bitcoin rewards strategy deeper into everyday spending with a new credit card designed to pay users in bitcoin for purchases they were already going to make.

In Fold’s launch announcement on X, the company said its Bitcoin Rewards Credit Card is now open to everyone. The card expands Fold’s existing debit-and-rewards ecosystem into credit spending, with rewards deposited as bitcoin rather than conventional airline miles or points.

According to Fold’s product announcement, cardholders can earn bitcoin on eligible purchases while using a Visa card for normal transactions. CoinDesk reported on the broader rollout as Fold extends its rewards model beyond the company’s earlier debit-card products.

Bitcoin rewards move into a familiar payment habit

The idea is intentionally ordinary: swipe or tap a card, receive bitcoin afterward. That removes one of the behavioral hurdles around Bitcoin adoption because the user does not need to change where a merchant settles the transaction or persuade a store to accept bitcoin directly.

That approach complements direct Bitcoin payment adoption rather than replacing it. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously covered Steak ’n Shake’s nationwide Lightning payments, where the merchant itself accepts Bitcoin. Fold approaches the same adoption problem from the opposite direction: keep the existing card rail, then route part of the consumer reward back into bitcoin.

Fold explains how its Bitcoin rewards ecosystem turns everyday spending into bitcoin accumulation.

Rewards are becoming another Bitcoin on-ramp

For Bitcoin, the important part is not the physical card. It is the distribution mechanism. Credit-card rewards are already a familiar consumer behavior, so paying those rewards in sats creates recurring Bitcoin exposure without requiring a separate exchange purchase every time.

That model fits into a wider expansion of Bitcoin financial rails. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently examined how USDT is moving onto Bitcoin through RGB and Lightning, while earlier coverage tracked Apple opening iPhone NFC access to third-party payment systems. Together, these developments show Bitcoin moving through multiple consumer paths: direct payment, Lightning, tokenized assets and rewards.

The tradeoff is still credit

A bitcoin-denominated reward does not change the underlying economics of revolving credit. Interest, fees and unpaid balances can outweigh rewards, just as they can with conventional points cards. The product’s Bitcoin angle therefore matters most as a distribution and accumulation mechanism, not as a reason to carry expensive debt.

The bigger adoption test will be retention: whether users treat bitcoin rewards as something to hold, spend or immediately sell. If a meaningful share keeps the sats, a familiar piece of consumer finance becomes a recurring Bitcoin acquisition channel operating quietly in the background of ordinary purchases.
