Gaming: RuneScape 4 Is Real — Jagex Is Building RS4 in Unreal Engine

A fantasy MMORPG landscape transitioning from older low-poly graphics into a richly detailed modern 3D world.

RuneScape is getting a fourth-generation MMO.

Jagex used RuneFest 2026 to reveal RS4, the working title for an entirely new RuneScape MMORPG being built in Unreal Engine. It is still years away, but the studio is announcing it unusually early because it wants players involved while the game is being designed.

RS4 is a new game, not a RuneScape replacement

On the official RS4 announcement page, Jagex makes the distinction explicit: RS4 will sit alongside RuneScape, Old School RuneScape and RuneScape: Dragonwilds as an independent experience. Those existing games keep their own teams, roadmaps and investment.

The name is not final either. Jagex says “RS4” works as a development label because this is its fourth generation RuneScape project, but the finished MMO may launch under another name.

Jagex’s official teaser gives the first look at its fourth-generation RuneScape MMO, currently known as RS4.

RuneScape is moving into Unreal Engine

The engine choice is one of the most consequential parts of the announcement. RuneScape grew out of browser technology and evolved through generations of Jagex’s own rendering and game systems. RS4 instead starts as a modern Unreal Engine project.

Jagex says it wants to combine technical lessons learned while building Dragonwilds with the community-driven development model that shaped RuneScape and Old School RuneScape. That does not tell us exactly how combat, skills, networking or world simulation will work, but it establishes the technical direction.

The move also fits a wider gaming trend. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered how Ace Combat 8 is using Unreal Engine 5 for a much larger multiplayer air base, while Gears of War: E-Day is attacking Unreal shader-compilation delays. Modern engines are becoming platforms for solving production-scale problems, not just graphics.

The new MMO begins in Ashenfall

RS4 will take place in Gielinor during the Sixth Age. The starting region is Ashenfall, the landmass introduced in Dragonwilds, with the new story set years after the destruction of the Dragon Queen Kuldra.

Jagex says Ashenfall is only the beginning. Its long-term ambition is to move into familiar RuneScape locations while also opening new regions and stories across Gielinor.

VGC’s report from the reveal confirms that the project remains in early development and that Jagex expects it to be several years before release.

Jagex is revealing the game before the big decisions are locked

There is still no announced platform list, membership model, account structure, combat system, skill design or release date. Jagex is deliberately showing RS4 before those questions have final public answers.

That makes this reveal less like a normal launch campaign and more like the beginning of an open development process. Jagex says it plans to share ideas, test systems and listen to players as the MMO takes shape.

The scale of the world will matter more than the graphics

Unreal Engine can modernize how Gielinor looks, but RuneScape’s defining trick has always been the density of systems underneath its world: skills, economies, quests, progression and years of persistent player history.

That is why the most interesting technical question is not whether RS4 can render a prettier fantasy landscape. It is whether Jagex can use a modern engine without losing the systemic depth that makes a persistent MMO feel enormous. The same principle appears in very different games: No Man’s Sky uses mathematics and procedural systems to turn compact rules into a gigantic explorable universe.

RS4 now has a similar long-term challenge. Jagex has the engine, the world and a 25-year-old community. The next few years will show whether those pieces can become a genuinely new generation of RuneScape.
