North Carolina just gave Saturday’s college football slate one of its biggest early surprises.
The Tar Heels erased a 10-0 deficit and beat previously unbeaten No. 25 Pittsburgh 21-17 on Saturday at Acrisure Stadium. It was North Carolina’s first win over a ranked opponent in three years and Bill Belichick’s first ranked victory as a college head coach, according to the official UNC box score.
One Play Flipped the Game
Pitt went ahead 17-14 early in the fourth quarter. North Carolina answered almost instantly. On the first play of the next drive, Billy Edwards Jr. found Shamar Easter down the seam for a 75-yard touchdown. Eleven seconds of game time after Pitt took the lead, UNC had it back.
Edwards finished 18-of-26 for 249 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions. The passing game mattered because North Carolina managed only 20 rushing yards, meaning the Tar Heels had to survive without the kind of balanced offense teams usually want on the road.
The Defense Finished It
The last stretch belonged to North Carolina’s defense. UNC stopped Pitt on three consecutive fourth-down attempts to close the game. Greg Smith also produced one of the Tar Heels’ interceptions as the defense repeatedly gave the offense another chance.

Pitt still outgained North Carolina 369-269 and held the ball for more than 36 minutes. That makes the result more striking: UNC won the moments that decided the game even while Pitt won several of the traditional box-score categories.
Saturday Is Already Getting Weird
North Carolina was not the only unranked team to hit a ranked opponent Saturday. South Carolina also routed No. 16 Florida 38-19, according to the NCAA’s Saturday roundup. That is exactly why the weekly college football schedule can change shape before the marquee night games even kick off.
BitcoinVersus.Tech has been following that Saturday volatility closely, from our Saturday college football predictions to Jeremiah Smith’s 217-yard breakout and earlier high-stakes SEC coverage.
What Comes Next
North Carolina moves to 3-2 and gets rival Duke next. Pitt falls to 5-1 after entering Saturday undefeated. One deep ball did not fix every UNC problem, but it gave Belichick the clearest proof yet that his program can finish a close game against a ranked opponent.
