Nigeria is pushing its government-backed N-ATLAS language model from release into practical deployment through a national build challenge that closes October 12.

The National AI Innovation Challenge, run through the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, NCAIR and ONDI, requires participants to submit a working technical product integrated with N-ATLAS rather than a proposal or research paper. The deadline is 11:59 p.m. WAT on October 12, 2026.

Communications Minister Bosun Tijani introduced N-ATLAS as Nigeria’s multilingual AI model in 2025.

NCAIR describes N-ATLAS as Nigeria’s first open-source multilingual large language model. It is fine-tuned from Llama-3 8B and supports Yoruba, Hausa, Igbo and Nigerian-accented English, with automatic speech recognition for voice applications.

Bosun Tijani discusses Nigeria’s broader national AI strategy with Arise News.

The challenge targets developer infrastructure, voice-first applications and sector-specific model tuning. Submissions also need real-world validation, technical documentation and a 3–5 minute demonstration video. N-ATLAS integration checks are scheduled for October 15–17, followed by a final showcase November 8–10.

The program connects with broader shifts BitcoinVersus has covered around open-source software, AI-assisted programming, and AI developer tooling.
