The U.S. Department of Energy has given PJM Interconnection temporary emergency authority to call additional generation and, if conditions worsen enough, direct backup generators at large electricity users to operate through October 16.
Under DOE Order No. 202-26-50, issued October 12 and effective October 13–16, PJM may dispatch specified generating units as needed for reliability. The order also allows backup generation to be used as a last resort before or during an Energy Emergency Alert Level 3.
The order comes as PJM manages warm fall weather alongside heavy maintenance work. BitcoinVersus.Tech recently covered DOE pressure on PJM to make large data-center customers cover more of their power-system costs, another sign that rapidly growing loads are becoming central to regional grid planning.
PJM said October 12 that it had issued a Maximum Generation Alert and Load Management Alert for October 13 and extended its Capacity Advisory through October 14. The operator expects roughly 62,000 MW of generation outages during the affected period, plus major transmission outages. Its Monday forecast put Tuesday peak demand at 112,447 MW.
Those conditions do not mean a blackout is underway. They indicate that PJM is preserving more operating flexibility while maintenance and demand leave less room for error. BitcoinVersus.Tech has also reported on 3.59 GW of new PJM power commitments tied to Google and Constellation, illustrating the longer-term effort to add supply.
The reliability debate is also affecting proposed capacity solutions. BitcoinVersus.Tech previously covered FERC’s review of PJM’s proposed 6.8 GW reliability backstop and large-load cost rules.
The key distinction is authorization versus actual operation. DOE has expanded PJM’s emergency toolkit for four days, but the order does not establish that every listed plant will run or that data centers have already been ordered onto backup generators. Actual use depends on grid conditions and PJM dispatch instructions.
