BitcoinVersus.Tech reported in January 2025 on Japan’s plan for a successor to Fugaku. The project is now far more concrete: RIKEN has published the basic design for FugakuNEXT and is targeting operation around 2030.
RIKEN’s May 29, 2026 technical report says the system is being designed with Fujitsu and NVIDIA as an integrated AI-HPC platform. Fujitsu leads the overall system, compute-node and CPU design, while NVIDIA leads the GPU infrastructure. It will be the first Japanese flagship supercomputer built around GPU accelerators.
The updated primary-source target is more precise than early reports: RIKEN is pursuing up to 100× application performance versus Fugaku, not a blanket 1,000× raw-compute increase. The design targets more than 600 EFLOPS of sparse FP8 AI performance while staying within an approximately 40 MW power constraint.
The architecture also connects directly to BitcoinVersus.Tech’s coverage of Fujitsu’s MONAKA processor work and NVIDIA-backed scientific supercomputing. FugakuNEXT remains a planned system, so its final delivered performance will not be known until hardware is built and independently benchmarked.
