Myron Rolle: From Florida State Safety to Pediatric Neurosurgeon

Illustrated career portrait of Myron Rolle as Florida State No. 3, an Oxford scholar, and a pediatric neurosurgeon

Myron Rolle has built one of the most extraordinary athlete-to-medicine careers of his generation: Florida State All-American safety, Rhodes Scholar, NFL player, physician and pediatric neurosurgeon.

The story is newly relevant. On October 8, 2026, Rolle returned to Princeton for a Sports, Race and Society lecture about balancing elite athletics, education and medicine. Princeton described him as a Harvard-trained pediatric neurosurgeon at Nemours Children’s Hospital, a Rhodes Scholar, bestselling author and former NFL player.

Long before the operating room, Rolle was wearing No. 3 for Florida State. He arrived in Tallahassee as one of the nation’s highest-rated recruits and became a starting safety for the Seminoles. At the same time, he moved through a demanding pre-med track at exceptional speed.

In 2008, Rolle graduated from Florida State in just two-and-a-half years with a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and a 3.75 GPA. That November, he was named one of 32 U.S. Rhodes Scholars for 2009. Florida State’s announcement noted that he had completed his pre-med requirements while playing high-level college football, conducting research and serving in multiple leadership roles.

CBS News profiled Rolle’s path from football and Oxford to neurosurgery.

Rolle then stepped away from football for a year to study medical anthropology at Oxford. He returned for the 2010 NFL Draft, where Tennessee selected him in the sixth round with the 207th overall pick. He later spent time with the Pittsburgh Steelers before leaving professional football and returning to the goal he had carried since childhood: becoming a neurosurgeon.

He earned his M.D. from the Florida State University College of Medicine in 2017, completed neurosurgery residency at Harvard Medical School and Massachusetts General Hospital, and then completed a pediatric neurosurgery fellowship at Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital.

A June 2026 post helped bring renewed attention to Rolle’s extraordinary football-to-neurosurgery career.

Today, Rolle is a pediatric neurosurgeon at Nemours Children’s Hospital in Orlando. The path is remarkable not because he simply changed careers, but because he reached elite levels in athletics, academics and medicine in succession.

His résumé belongs beside Leland Melvin’s move from NFL draft pick to engineer to astronaut, Eric Heiden’s journey from five Olympic gold medals to orthopedic surgery, and Jonny Kim’s path from Navy SEAL to doctor to astronaut. Rolle’s version is every bit as exceptional: No. 3 at Florida State, Oxford, the NFL, medical school and finally pediatric brain surgery.
