How PPLNS Mining Pools Work

PPLNS means Pay Per Last N Shares. It is a Bitcoin mining-pool payout method that rewards miners based on qualifying work submitted during a recent share window when the pool finds a block.

Unlike PPS mining, PPLNS does not guarantee a fixed payment for each accepted share. When the pool finds a block, the reward is divided among miners according to their weighted shares in the eligible window, after any pool fees.

Example: If your miner contributed 2% of the eligible weighted shares, it would generally earn about 2% of the distributable block reward. But if the pool finds no blocks during a period, there may be no payout for that period.

The “N” is a share-window size, not necessarily a fixed number of hours. Shares can age out as new work arrives. Miners joining or leaving the pool may therefore experience payout ramp-up or ramp-down depending on its exact rules.

PPLNS leaves short-term block-luck variance with miners, while PPS shifts more of that variance to the pool operator. Compare fees, transaction-fee treatment, window size and payout thresholds before choosing a pool.
